Use of safety and protective gear
The company focuses strongly on Health, Safety and the Environment and works continuously on improvements within this area. There are instructions in the company's quality management system for various elements of its business, many of which are intended to make the workplace safer for employees and the community. Employees must fallow the rules and instructions in force at all times concerning use of safety and protective gear.

ISO 14001 – focus on the environment
Environmental management according to the defined standard is Protan's contribution to sustainable
development, i.e. that the company does not pollute or use more non-renewable resources than absolutely necessary. We do this to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy the same quality of life as our own.

Protan has implemented ISO 14001

In December 1997, Protan became the first company in the industry approved to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, which covers the entire production chain from approval of our raw material suppliers' environmental documentation, to use and recycling of the products Protan produces. Customers selecting
Protan as their supplier are assured that all elements of our business are planned to yield the least possible negative impact on the environment, locally and globally. Our management system ensures continuous improvement of our environmental performance through the implementation and monitoring of improvement programmes. All operations within the business run according to planned procedures which minimise the risk of emissions and wasted resources. An annual, external audit performed by Det Norske Veritas and our own, internal quality and environmental audits ensure that the system is followed.

Protan, PVC and the environment
Will the discussion never end, despite the fact that few materials have been as thoroughly researched as PVC? The debate has, however, begun to change character. From being concentrated on the health risk for PVC production personnel and mercury pollution from chlorine manufacture, it has moved on via development of hydrochloric acid and dioxins in the event of fire, to alleged problems with recycling and dumping. Since PVC has been more or less found innocent of most such allegations, the debate in recent years has turned to additives, primarily stabilisers and softeners. In this brochure, we have covered all the aforementioned themes in general, for PVC and particularly for PVC roof covering. The aim of the brochure is to provide a qualitative, updated assessment of PVC in the context of the environment.

PVC and fire
A vital element in the fireproofing of buildings is the use of materials which are fire-resistant. The chorine content in PVC helps reduce the spread of fire. In relation to wood, rigid PVC gives a marginally increased fire risk in a building.
